Premature Birth Stories – Alternative Incubator

Babies born prematurely do require intensive or semi intensive care in hospital. However, if it is possible, preterm infants can also be treated at home.

One thing to remember for the parents is to ensure the baby’s body temperature to keep warm, because premature babies are prone to hypothermia because their skin is still very thin. That is why premature babies are placed in an incubator at the hospital.

At home, the most appropriate ways to keep the babies warm is using Kangaroo Method. This method imitates the mother’s kangaroos’ way to keep their kids warm.

The procedure of kangaroo method is, babies are naked and wearing only a diaper and covering their heads. Then they are inserted into the mother’s clothes and placed between the breasts. Mother dress serves to cover the entire body of the baby like a kangaroo pouch.

“This kangaroo method is the most secure technique because the temperature of mother will transfer heat to the babies so they will not be cold,” dr.Rinawati Rohsiswatmo Sp.A, an expert of Perinatology from Medical Faculty of Indonesia University – RSCM, said on Tuesday, 6/7/2010.

She added more information, the babies should not be lighten up and set at over heat. “It doesn’t need to put a lamp near their beds, even a bottle containing hot water. It’s enough to put them on their mother’s breast.

This Kangoroo Method can be done for about 24 hours. Therefore, it is required an alternate mother which is can be performed by father or other family members. “The principle is the baby’s skin stick to the mother’s skin so the baby can take the heat from the body of his mother,” said Rina.

How long is the kangaroo method done? “Until the baby doesn’t want,” she said. Babies can also give signals such as fussy when they were embraced or rebellious.
